Mid 15th C Armet

This helmet type evolved from the great bascinet as the desire for a close-fitting knightly helmet became popular. To don or remove it, the visor must be raised and the cheekplates hinged open.

Historical examples often had no breaths pierced in the visor, although a few had piercings on the lower right side. I have added extra breaths on this particular helmet to make it more suitable for rattan combat. The visor locks with a sneck hook, which is itself locked by a spring stud, preventing accidental opening. The cheekplates are locked in the rear by closing under the tail of the skull, adding stability to the design.

The helmet shown has optional triangular rolls bordering the ocular opening.

Other options can be added, such as a full tourney wrapper, rear rondel, gorget plates, vervelles for hanging maille at the neck opening, etc.
